500 W S-BAND ISOLATOR (ARTES 5.1 5C.236) EXPRO+

Description

The objective of this activity is to develop an EM S-Band isolator suitable for 500 W operation. Targeted improvements: To increase the power handling capability (from 250 W to 500 W) of high-power isolators for use in applications employing 500 W S-band TWTs. Description: The trend in commercial S-DARS satellites (Satellite Digital Audio Radio Service) is to increase the output RF power. ESA is already supporting the development of a 500 W S-Band TWT that will double the power level with respect to previous solutions. However, there is currently no compact, space qualified isolator with waveguide interfaces capable of withstanding 500 W RF power at S-Band. To protect a 500 W S-Band TWT a single isolator unit is preferred over bulkier power divided/combined alternatives involving lower power isolators. The starting point for this activity is the study of the limitations of the current 250 W solution. The main challenges foreseen in this activity are the thermal management as well as suitable material selection. The activity shall cover the following aspects: - Literature and patent survey for state of the art solutions identifying the limitations of the current design - Design and construction of two different high power circulator breadboards and of one high power load breadboard. - Design, construction and high power testing of one isolator EM assembly (selected circulator design + load). Procurement Policy: C(2)= A relevant participation (in terms of quality and quantity) of non-primes (incl. SMEs) is required.
