Objectives

The main objectives of this project was to:

  • Investigate a number of issues which are related to the transport of IP (IPv4 / IPv6) over DVB networks,

  • Support ongoing research activities on these topics,

  • Implement one of the currently proposed drafts of the IP-over-DVB community

  • Execute interoperability tests with other available implementation,

  • Demonstrate the suitability of the implemented proposed draft in realistic setups addressing scenarios typical for satellite ISPs or Teleport operators, and to

  • Give conclusions on the achieved results and recommendations for possible next steps.

Furthermore, support has been given to the IP-over-DVB community to organize and establish an IETF working group which concentrates on IP-over-DVB issues.
Challenges

The key issues of this project have been the provision of a prototype implementation of the proposed IP-over-DVB draft, the support of the IP-over-DVB community in forming an IETF working group, and the identification of not yet addressed issues with IP-over-DVB with recommendations how to proceed further.

Benefits

The following are the main benefits of this project:

  • Provision of a prototype implementation of one of the proposed drafts of the IP-over-DVB community.

  • Support for the IP-over-DVB community to establish an IETF working group.

  • Execution of first interoperability tests with other implementations if available.

  • Demonstration of advanced real-world networking scenarios to show the functionality of the prototype implementation.

  • Provide input to the IP-over-DVB community about issues which are not yet addressed or solved.
Features

As one of the main objectives of this project was to implement a proposed draft (draft-fair-ipdvb-ule-02.txt) which was put forward by the IP-over-DVB community, interoperation tests have been executed between two parallel projects (IABG/6WIND and Joanneum Research). As the interoperability tests have only concentrated on IP-over-DVB issues and the proposed draft, only the forward link was tested with the following test system architecture:

The interoperability tests results have compiled into a separate report, which was made available to the ipdvb working group and community.

But, in order to also demonstrate the functionality of the IP-over-DVB implementation when used with real traffic from applications, several realistic scenarios have been developed during this project and integrated in the advanced demonstration architecture, which is shown below:

Plan

  • Inventory of IP-over-DVB related activities and developments.

  • Study of emerging IP-over-DVB encapsulation methods.

  • Propose improvements to currently emerging IP-over-DVB encapsulation methods.

  • Prototype IP-over-DVB encapsulation methods.

  • Provide User Manual for the IP/DVB gateway and IRD device.

  • Interoperability testing of IP/DVB gateway and IRD unit equipment.

  • Demonstration of advanced networking scenarios.

  • Provision of conclusions and recommendations for further developments which address possibly identified IP-over-DVB issues.
