Short course satellite communications

ESA’s Directorate of Telecommunications and Integrated Applications (TIA) is co-organising with the University of Oxford Department for Continuing Education a short course in satellite communications for professionals.

21st Ka and Broadband Communications Conference
12-14 October 2015, Bologna, Italy

This year's conference, of which ESA is a sponsor, will focus on the latest in satellite communications: broadcast, point to point, mobile, internet, data relay, inter-planetary, optical downloading, dual-use systems, and more. Call for papers now open.

First workshop on satellite terminals organised in the UK

24 June -2015 – At the recent satellite terminals workshop in London, it was decided that a European Terminals Working Group would be established so that synergies between involved stakeholders can be fully exploited, enabling future opportunities for satcoms.

Neosat: on schedule

19 June 2015 – The ARTES Neosat programme is on schedule, and the first two next-generation geostationary satellites based on the new platform are being built for launch by 2019.

Optical communications: ready for space

18 June 2015 – At a recent ESA workshop, participants discussed how optical space technologies have matured and could be ready to be applied in commercial satellite systems, with significant advantages.

Hot firing of world's first 3d-printed platinum thruster chamber

17 June 2015 – The world’s first spacecraft thruster with a platinum combustion chamber and nozzle made by 3D printing has passed its baptism of fire with a series of firings lasting more than an hour. The new thruster is part of an activity supported by ESA through the ARTES Programme.

In this activity we perform a preliminary design of possible hybrid antenna solutions for future mobile terminals. The best solution is designed in detail. A demonstrator of the antenna is manufactured and tested to validate the most critical aspects of the design and the expected capabilities.

A special antenna for GEO Telecom satellites is developed. The antenna enables tracking of the GNSS satellites from different constellations around the Earth and providing position information to complement inputs from the star trackers to obtain orbit determination.
ETSACO

2operate, Tele Greenland, and Thales Alenia Space are executing this project to identify opportunities for reusing technology, standards, and concepts from terrestrial (non-satellite) telecommunications in the SATCOM industry. The purpose is to speed-up the development of competitive SATCOM offerings. Generally, terrestrial (cellular) telecommunications is better able to provide high capacity and low latency to subscribers in densely populated (urban) areas than SATCOM. SATCOM on the other hand has certain advantages over terrestrial telecommunications related to coverage and broadcasting. Also, certain use cases of M2M may be served better via satellite. The commercial volume of the SATCOM industry, however, is still much smaller, and the amount of brainpower spent in developing technology is significantly lower. Therefore, systematic scouting for opportunities to reuse/adopt technology and standards is required.
