12-14 October 2015, Bologna, Italy

This year's conference, of which ESA is a sponsor, will focus on the latest in satellite communications: broadcast, point to point, mobile, internet, data relay, inter-planetary, optical downloading, dual-use systems, and more. Call for papers now open.

ARTES Final Presentation Days for Platform and Ground Segment
5-6 November 2015

This event will complement the ARTES 1 Presentations done on 14-15 January 2015 and Payload Technologies and Products days held at ESTEC on 03-05 February 2015.

W-band: the next frontier for satcoms

22 April 2015 – The first ESA W-band workshop highlighted both the potential and the challenges for deploying W-band for satellite communications and the role ESA is playing in supporting the European space industry in this development.

Inmarsat transfers BGAN services to Alphasat

27 March 2015 – UK satcoms operator Inmarsat has transferred its Broadband Global Area Network services to Alphasat, the advanced telecommunications satellite developed in a partnership between Inmarsat and ESA. Inmarsat will be using Alphasat to provide BGAN-based safety services across Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

Atlas delivers

16 March 2015 – Three key components of Eutelsat' s forthcoming EUTELSAT 8 West B satellite will be embarking on their first mission into space thanks to Atlas, a recent extension of ARTES 3-4 in which ESA provides assistance in obtaining first flight opportunities for new products.

EDRS services for Copernicus

25 February 2015 – ESA and the European Commission announce that the European Data Relay System (EDRS) will provide services to the EU Copernicus programme, which is to serve as its anchor customer.

SmallGEO AG1 undergoes environmental testing

20 February 2015 – The Hispasat AG1 communications satellite completes the integration phase in the OHB System's cleanroom in Bremen (DE) and is now undergoing environmental impact testing.

Latest Projects

Review of Iris ATN/IPS and feedback to standardisation fora
24 April 2015
Within the Iris programme ANTARES study focuses on specification, design, development and testing of a new Communication Standard for satellite-based Air Traffic Management communications. The implementation of ANTARES project however revealed some gaps and ambiguities and potential improvements to existing ICAO standards. The objective of this activity is to compile ambiguities, potential improvements and recommendations to ICAO ATN/IPS standards.
Payload Interface Unit (PLIU)
23 April 2015
The PLIU is a unit containing command and acquisition channels of standard type, like High Level Commands and Thermistor acquisition channels. It contains power switches for heater control and stepper motor drivers. The interface to a central computer consists of a dual redundant Mil-Std-1553B bus. The challenge is to make a low-cost production series by using commercial components and a production friendly design.
22 April 2015
This project investigates the feasibility of satellite networks integration with terrestrial clouds to dynamically and optimally offer services. It identifies suitable solutions in connection to key satellite capabilities, such as broadcasting/multicasting, large coverage areas, ability to reach remote areas, mobility support, service resilience and flexibility for extending capacity, as well as uniform QoS irrespective of distance to end user.
NOVEL SAT-AIS Receiver Phase B2/C/D
20 April 2015
The main objective of this activity is the development of a Novel SAT-AIS Receiver (NAIS), focusing on an in-orbit upgradable SDR platform with low power consumption, small size and advanced signal processing.
Dual-Polarization Payloads for Higher Capacity Utilization
17 April 2015
An innovative Ka-band multi-beam satellite payload for Broad-Band Services is proposed which is based on a conventional multi-beam payload architecture with an additional flexible payload section feeding a Steerable Antenna system. Such enhanced payload architecture allows using the Dual-Polarization at user beam level on the hot spots in order to increase the capacity utilization on highly uneven traffic demand distribution throughout the satellite coverage.
