Additive Manufacturing for RF/Microwave Hardware

Tesat-Spacecom's Ka-band IMUX now flying multiple missions

31 August 2016 –  With support of ARTES, Tesat-Spacecom (DE) developed a new line of input multiplexers which are now processing upwards of 1,400 channels on multiple telecoms missions.

ARTES enables mass production of coaxial circulators and isolators in Germany

15 July 2016 – German space tech company TESAT has developed robust, automised processes for the mass production of coaxial interface circulators and isolators for satellites. Some 10,000 units have now been produced this way, making the new product line an unparalleled success.

New heat dissipater keeps satellites cool in space

13 July 2016 – With support from ESA, a European consortium led by Airbus DS has developed a novel Deployable Panel Radiator that will provide much-needed additional radiating capacity for highly dissipative payloads, such as those planned for the next generation of very high throughput satellites.

26 May 2015 – TESAT-Spacecom, one of Germany’s largest space technology companies, has pioneered the application of additive manufacturing techniques, also known as 3D printing, for the production of microwave components.

The development provides a cost efficient on-board processor solution for applications using either RF signals or data collection services. Low bandwidth missions, such as Internet-of-Things (IoT) and Machine-To-Machine (M2M) communication have been targeted, as well as more general applications such as spectrum survey, geo-location and general data collection services.
SatcomWeather
Status Date: 31 August 2016
VSATs link quality is very dependent on the tropospheric situation along the fixed slant path between the terminal and the satellite. The SatcomWeather project seeks for support of VSAT operators in optimizing networks and data throughput over time by classifying stations with optimization potential, optimize thresholds for installations, and derive weather data from the VSAT-measurements.

Similar expertise was gained now for space applications by the development, design, integration and testing of Harmonic Drive ® gears which are to be used in reliable, weight and performance optimised space mechanism.
Selectable Sub-Reflector Antenna
Status Date: 24 August 2016
The objective of this ARTES3-4 project is to design, manufacture and qualify an Engineering Qualification Model of a Selectable Sub-Reflector Antenna. This new Rx/Tx antenna product aims to cope with coverage flexiblity needs in Ku band. This antenna is steerable and able to generate 1 shaped or pencil beam among 4 possible. The antenna is in dual optics Gregorian configuration, it is composed of 4 shaped sub-reflectors. The desired sub-reflector is positioned in front of the feed thanks to a rotary actuator.
Ka-METROCAL
Status Date: 8 August 2016
Ka-METROCAL aims to demonstrate the feasibility and use of a novel automated RF path calibration system for gateway stations of broadband satellite networks operating in Ka-band spectrum. Ka-METROCAL outperforms traditional approaches by applying proven calibration concepts that rely on the use of a broadband white noise source to characterize a receiver chain gain or attenuation.
