This year's conference, of which ESA is a sponsor, will focus on the latest in satellite communications: broadcast, point to point, mobile, internet, data relay, inter-planetary, optical downloading, dual-use systems, and more. Call for papers now open.

ARTES Final Presentation Days for Platform and Ground Segment
5-6 November 2015

This event will complement the ARTES 1 Presentations done on 14-15 January 2015 and Payload Technologies and Products days held at ESTEC on 03-05 February 2015.

Large turnout for 5th RPAS Workshop at ESTEC

29 May 2015 – The 5th User & Stakeholder RPAS Workshop, jointly organised by ESA, EDAEASA and Eurocontrol, which took place at ESTEC on 21 May, was attended by some 140 participants, reflecting the growing interest in the new applications offered by the integration of remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) with space assets.

The twin faces of Janus Aero and Janus Maritime

20 May 2015 – Teleinformatica e Sistemi (TeS) has announced the first commercial orders for Janus, the new mobile satellite antenna technology for mobile applications that it developed with the support of ARTES.

EDA and ESA launch DeSIRE II demonstration project

15 May 2015 – The European Defence Agency (EDA) and the European Space Agency (ESA) announce a new project to support the development of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) flying in non-segregated airspace.

W-band: the next frontier for satcoms

22 April 2015 – The first ESA W-band workshop highlighted both the potential and the challenges for deploying W-band for satellite communications and the role ESA is playing in supporting the European space industry in this development.

Inmarsat transfers BGAN services to Alphasat

27 March 2015 – UK satcoms operator Inmarsat has transferred its Broadband Global Area Network services to Alphasat, the advanced telecommunications satellite developed in a partnership between Inmarsat and ESA. Inmarsat will be using Alphasat to provide BGAN-based safety services across Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

Latest Projects

Modular Top Floor Antenna - Phase II
29 May 2015
Modular Top Floor Antenna is a new design concept for Top Floor antennas that gives priority to the modularity of the support structure. This improved design allows boarding a variable number of antennas with minimum modifications of the structure, reducing in this way the planning and cost of this product.
Extendable Thruster Module Assembly / Deployable Pointing System
28 May 2015
EHP and Airbus Defence & Space are currently developing a new generation of Extendable Thruster Pointing Mechanism to improve the capabilities of its existing Civil Telecommunications spacecraft platforms. The Extendable Thruster Pointing Mechanism’s, is one of the main enablers allowing an intensive and efficient use of electric propulsion on Eurostar 3000 telecommunications satellites, both for the orbit raising phase (EOR) and the station keeping manoeuvers
28 May 2015
The AISTB project aims at developing an End-to-End test tool able to evaluate the different AIS performances both at system and subsystem level, in a laboratory environment. The AIS Testbed will be used in the Comparative Performance Assessment activity for evaluating the performances of existing or planned systems and of the underlying technologies. Two main subsystems were developed: the AIS Receiver Testbench, capable of interfacing with different AIS receivers (prototype, engineering model, EQM) from different manufacturers to assess their functionality and performance; and the System Emulator, a software capable of modeling any AIS constellation with configurable key system parameters including vessels traffic distribution, constellation, access protocol as well as AIS antenna and receiver characteristics. The AIS Receiver Test Bench also includes a prototyping hardware platform to be used to implement the AIS receiver algorithms specified by ESA for benchmarking purposes. As a secondary objective, advanced beamforming techniques to enhance the satellite AIS detection performance were studied and evaluated in detail, possibly leading to a reduced constellation and thus a lower total space segment cost.
High Efficiency Video Encoding for 4K Satellite Distribution
18 May 2015
The project aims to develop the key technologies for UHD satellite broadcasting systems and services. The targeted developments include UHD capable HEVC encoder and decoder for satellite broadcast delivery capable also for contribution and digital cinema event streaming, at down to 50% of H264 rates. The project covers also the development of new transport interface for HEVC VoD.
PBC Cooling
13 May 2015
The “PCB cooling” project aimed at demonstrating the use of Loop Heat Pipe Technology for electronic card cooling. A multi-stage approach has been implemented to be able to cool a primary dissipative zone as well as additional zones on the PCB. It demonstrated the interest of such approach on a breadboard.
