Future Opportunities for In-Orbit Demonstration

The European Space Agency has published an “Announcement of Opportunity” for Pioneer, while Innovate UK has created the In-Orbit Demonstration (IOD) Programme, delivered by the Satellite Applications Catapult. Both of which aim to lower the barriers to entry and stimulate new in-orbit test missions for innovative applications and services. This workshop will tell you how demonstrate in-orbit can remove obstacles across the value chain and open up new opportunities.

Additive Manufacturing for RF/Microwave Hardware

New pocketqubesat developed with ARTES Entry support

26 October 2016 – With the support of ESA and Innovate UK, a Scottish startup, Alba Orbital, has built a tiny satellite called  Unicorn-1 that is slated for launch in early 2017.

18 October 2016 – Thales Alenia Space UK’s new Electric Propulsion Integration Centre in Belfast will supply electric propulsion modules for Spacebus Neo, part of the ARTES Neosat programme.

SSPA with Reduced Footprint
Status Date: 28 October 2016
A new EM L-band vertical SSPA equipment using GaN Technology from UMS and thermal management solutions has been developed. With a CW signal, at hot temperature (85°C) and in the useful frequency bandwidth of [1,518 – 1,559 GHz], the equipment delivers an output power of 43W with an associated PAE of 53%. Total mass of the EM L-band SSPA equipment is 1,44kg with dimensions L=240mm, W=105mm, H=124mm.
Development of an EQM for a Ka-Band Preselect Filter
Status Date: 28 October 2016
The aim of this activity is to develop an EQM model for a Ka Band Preselected filter with a compact design and low insertion losses for comsat's payloads and also to be placed after the antennas. This filter is used in the payload to filter the up-link corresponding to the commercial band defined within Ka Band. This component is placed between the reception antennas and the input of the IMUXES.

Through the Artes-34 R&D project “2nd Generation Command Receiver” (“Rx2”) with ESA, Norspace has developed and successfully qualified the frequency agile Command Receiver. The EQM was qualified both as a Ku-band and a C-band Command Receiver in two different test campaigns. In addition the program has also prepared the receiver for Ka-band operation.
Optopyrotechnics for Telecom Satellites
Status Date: 17 October 2016
The project was divided into two phases, Phase 1 and Phase 2. The main objectives of the Phase 1 project activities were to: • Establish status for conventional- and laser pyrotechnics • Establish requirements for a satellite optopyro system The main objectives of the Phase 2 project activities were to: • Design and build breadboard based on Phase 1 conclusions • Verify the function and performance of the breadboard

Through the Artes-34 R&D project “Ku Baseband Converters for Digital Transparent Processors” (“KuBB”) with ESA, Norspace has developed and successfully qualified the two frequency converter units for conversion between Ku and Baseband frequencies. The up- and down-converter units are tailored for use on advanced High Throughput Satellites using digital transparent processors.
