Description

The objective of the activity is to design, manufacture and test connectivity solutions for power, data and thermal transfer acrossdeployed active antenna panels compatible with the form factor limitations of small satellites. A scaled engineering model including critical functionality relevant to power, thermal and data transfer across panels will be developed and evaluated for effectiveness and repeatability.Targeted Improvements:Enabling deployable active antennas of at least 3-6 panels, compatible with small satellite accommodation limitationsDescription:Recent years have witnessed an explosion of new players in the commercial satellite market. The affordability of launching small satellites with standard form factors lowered the barrier to market entry. Today commercial systems even using nano-satellites are being developed and are starting to be deployed. One of the markets targeted is satellite-based Internet of Things services. For broadband communications, one of the limits imposed by nano-satellites is the power available from the platform, resulting in an EIRP that is not sufficient to sustain the data rates necessary to serve even single users. A larger antenna aperture could compensate for the limited power available, however this requires innovative DC power, RF and thermal connectivity solutions for compact, stowable and deployable active antennas that do not exist today.This activity will design, manufacture and test connectivity solutions for power, data and thermal transfer across deployed active antenna panels that are compatible with the form factor limitations of small satellites. A scaled engineering model of the connectivity solution, including critical functionality relevant to power, thermal and data transfer across panels, will be developed and evaluated. The developed concepts willserve mission scenarios for future constellations.
