The ARTES European Data Relay Satellite element is dedicated to the development and implementation of the European Data Relay System (EDRS). Data relay satellites are placed in geostationary orbit to relay information to and from non-geostationary satellites, spacecraft, other vehicles, and fixed Earth stations that otherwise are not able to permanently transmit/receive data.
ESA’s laser satellite EDRS-C has settled at its new home in Munich for the last tests before launch. This final set will make sure the satellite and its optical payload can...
12 January 2017 – Airbus Defence & Space, which developed the European Data Relay Satellite system (EDRS) in private-public partnership with ESA, has launched the...
23 November 2016 - The European Data Relay System began servicing Europe’s Earth observing Copernicus programme yesterday, transferring observations in quasi-real time using...
9 December 2015 – After a year-long wait for a Proton launcher to become available, the EDRS-A laser communications payload and its Eutelsat host satellite have arrived...
5 August 2015 – Having recently completed 100 communication sessions, the optical inter-satellite link between Sentinel-1A and Alphasat is delivering...
21 June 2015 – Last week's roundtable discussion on EDRS services at Le Bourget that was moderated by Magali Vaissiere, Director of TIA, is now online. Find out more...

11 February 2015 – As Sentinel-2A nears the end of testing before being shipped to its launch site, one of the last jobs has been to make sure the satellite’s laser terminal...
28 November 2014 – Marking a first in space, Sentinel-1A and Alphasat have linked up by laser stretching almost 36 000 km across space to deliver images of Earth just moments...
The first component of Europe’s space data highway passed several critical tests this summer replicating the harsh launch and space conditions it will soon have to endure.
The project targets the definition of an ESA DRS mission. From a technical standpoint, the project contributes to identifying and consolidating the requirements of an efficient EDRS solution which includes suitable payloads and frequency bands. From a business standpoint, the project intends to identify the various business and governance options...
Astrium Services (ASV), a company dedicated to the development and promotion of satellite services, has been awarded a Phase 0 contract by ESA for a study related to the development of a European Data Relay Service (DRS) capability.
The study is focused on the business viability of a Data Relay System (DRS) mission. Once defined a detailed market segmentation and the related classes of services that a DRS mission can provide will be given. The following activities have been performed: Definition of DRS mission drivers;
Mission analysis to define a system architecture;...
The EDRS (European Data Relay Satellite) Service Provider Study was carried out by Eutelsat with the aim of investigating both technical and commercial aspects of the EDRS system from the Satellite Operator?s perspective. The EDRS mission and architectures analysed in this study are primarily compatible with the service delivery of data relay and...
