Description

Objective: The objective of the activity is to develop, manufacture and test a multi-core saddle with an integrated two-phase vapour channel to absorb heat from a large surface and deliver it across the entire peripheries of multiple loop heat pipe evaporator cores.

Targeted Improvements: Loop heat pipes with a length of 400mm with an overall transport capability above 2kW; Two-phase saddleperformance four times higher compared to a conventional saddle.

Description: Large deployable radiators typically utilise two tothreeLoop Heat Pipes (LHP) to transport heat. Each LHP has its own saddle, mounted on the heat pipe network. Each saddle is constrained in surface area yet must transport a large amount of waste heat. The temperature gradient between the heat pipe network and the LHP is a major performance driver. A two-phase LHP saddle would allow a larger surface interface area on the heat pipe network. This would then minimise the temperature gradient through the interface. Furthermore, this would also enable the implementation of multiple cores using multiple LHPs within the same saddle, achieving a more uniform temperature distribution between LHPs and a more compact overall accommodation. After selection of suitable materials and manufacturing processes, an Engineering Model shall be manufacturedand tested and the results shall be correlated to predictions.
