Objective: The objective of this activity is to adapt and reuse the 3GPP (Release 13 and beyond) terrestrial radio access technologies in satellite systems in order to significantly simplify the implementation of the emerging satellite networks and the integration of satellite and terrestrial networks. The adapted technologies will be implemented and demonstrated in a combined hardware/software verification platform.
Targeted Improvements: Enabling technology developments to ease the integration of satellite and terrestrial networks.
In Terrestrial mobile communications and in particular their radio access technologies are researched and standardised in the framework of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) group resulting in the different 3GPP Releases. Satellite communications may take advantage of this tremendous amount of RD and spin in technologies to ease the evolution of current satellite networks and foster new systems and services.However, adopting terrestrial technologies for possible use in satellite scenarios faces several technical challenges. For example, the impact of the Doppler frequency shift on the physical layer performance, the impact of the end-to-end delay on the radio access network, the signal to interference ratio may be more severe in satcom systemscompared to their terrestrial counterparts, just to mention some.
All these impairments require the development of adaptations or countermeasures for the terrestrial technologies to work in the satellite environment.
This activity will develop the necessary adaptations of 3GPP terrestrial radio access technologies with potential use in satellite communications. Examples of such technologies are modulations, forward error correction coding techniques, multiple access schemes and interference management techniques. A combined hardware/software verification platform will also be developed to assess their performance in a set of satellite related scenarios.
