On Delegation Request (formerly called Priority 2)
Objective: The objective of the activity is to design, manufacture and test acoustic filters with wide bandwidths in the range of 500 MHz for use in very high throughput satellite applications.
Targeted Improvements:Enabling technology development to achieve a reduction of the footprint and mass of L- and S-band filters by at least 50%.
Description: RF surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters are widely used in frequency converters because of their very compact size. The filters typically exhibit excellent performance in passband selectivity and sufficient power-handling capability at frequencies up toL/S-band, however the achievable bandwidth is typically limited to a few per cent. The limited bandwidth often imposes the use of larger size filtering technologies, increasing frequency converter size and mass (e.g. for a 250 MHz bandwidth requirement).
This bandwidth limitation could be overcome using advanced techniques, such as the use of slanted transducer design, advanced materials (e.g. layered LiNbO3/Al2O3) or combination with inductive element techniques. These methods provide bandwidth enhancement and have been demonstrated for ground applications.
This activity aims at developing wideband compact filters at L -band and S-band, where a conventional planar implementation is quite large. Breadboards of wideband acoustic filters in L-band or S-band shall be designed, manufactured and tested to evaluate the performance and demonstrate the mass and envelope savings. The activity shall include necessary process and material development.
Procurement Policy: C(1) = Activity restricted to non-prime contractors (incl. SMEs).
