Satellite Communication for Air Traffic Management (Iris)

The ARTES Satellite Communication for Air Traffic Management element, or Iris, aims to supply a validated satellite-based communication solution for the European Air Traffic Management System. It is implemented in close collaboration with the Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research (SESAR) Programme launched in 2006 by EUROCONTROL and the European Community.

First flight trials for satellite-based air traffic management

20 December 2016 – First flight trials were recently undertaken by ESA and Inmarsat in the next stage of the ARTES Iris Precursor programme to deliver high-capacity secure digital data links via satellite for air–ground communications for cockpit crews over European airspace.

Iris Information Event presentations available for download

The Netherlands joins the Iris Programme

Watch satcoms support aircraft pilots - thanks to Iris

Iris ANTARES study upgrades draft of satellite communications standard

An upgraded version of the ANTARES Technical specifications is now available for download. Produced by the Iris ANTARES project, this document defines a new satellite-based communication standard for air traffic management (ATM).
