AmerHis: A Switchboard in Space

The system is much more than just providing a number of separate transponders to become a broadband switchboard in space. AmerHis introduces a a geo-stationary switched multimedia system which is able to provide standardized (DVB-S/DVB-RCS)broadband services and connectivty to user terminals across two continents.

The system will allow satllites with a much larger capacity. These will be able to cover dozens of spots in new frequency bands, giving millions of users interactive services. Amazones (scheduled for launch in the first half of 2004) is such a satellite.

That it will be deployed on four spot beams, three of which are in America, clearly demonstrates the vehicle's value in promoting European and Canadian equipment and services to other regions of the world.

The agreement (click here) for the development of this new multimedia system was signed on 8 October 2002. The development consortium is being led by Alcatel Espacio with support from Alcatel Space (France). Mier and Indra Espacio of Spain, EMS of Canada and Nera of Norway are also participating.
