ARTES 1 Questions Answered At ESA Tailored Event In Luxembourg

Co-organized by LUXINNOVATION and the Luxembourg Ministry of Culture, Higher Education and Research, the event was held to discuss ESA's Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems (ARTES) 1 Programme.

"From our point of view, we had a good participation from the Luxembourg industry involved in the telecommunication area,"said Jean Trimbour, ESA National Contact Point from LUXINNOVATION. "We expect now a strong involvement of these companies and laboratories in the ARTES studies to be started in 2008."

The primary objectives of the event were to outline planned ARTES 1 activities for 2007 and 2008 and to learn of the opportunities available for potential Luxembourg players. The organizations in attendance were pleased with the information presented.

Presentations were given by Mr. Ralph Bierett, head of ESA's Strategy and Future Programmes Department and co-chair of the Task Force ESA-Luxembourg, and Ms. Maria Guta, a strategy officer with ESA.

"It is our dedicated interest to include many companies and all the member states into the preparation of our strategy. The event in Luxembourg and several bilateral meetings with industry fostered our cooperation with Luxembourg industry and gave us some valuable input for our work," said Bierett.

In his presentation entitled Activities on Strategy and Applications in Satellite Telecommunication and Navigation, Bierett discussed Space and Human Security, Air Traffic Management & Aeronautical applications, Interplanetary Communication systems, Satcom Systems Competitiveness, and Support to Telecom Stategy. He also reviewed the importance of Satellite Telecommunications to Civil Protection and satcom in early warning scenarioes such as a biological terrorist attack. The complete presentation is available for download using the links in the right menu bar.

This two-hour event included face to face sessions with ESA personnel. These proved to be very popular with attendees.

ARTES constitutes a set of legal and financial frames that allow the implementation of research and development activities with different degrees of technical and commercial maturity. The ARTES 1 programme declaration sets two major objectives for this programme line:

1. To perform mission, system, general configuration studies and other activities to prepare and continuously update ESA's medium and long-term programme in the field of Telecommunication

2. To define the technology developments necessary for the execution of the telecommunication programme and their timing and provide these requirements as input to the technology programme.
