Iris, element 10 of the ARTES Programme, aims to develop a new air-ground communication system for Air Traffic Management. It is a satellite-based solution for the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) programme. By 2020, it will contribute to the modernisation of air traffic management by providing digital datalinks to cockpit crews in continental and oceanic airspace.
ESA is now implementing the design phase of the Iris programme with the support of the European Commission, the SESAR Joint Undertaking (SJU), Eurocontrol, the European space industry, air navigation service providers and aviation stakeholders. Since the inception of Iris, ESA has involved the best competences in the aviation, telecom research and industrial communities to make sure that the lessons of the past are applied and that a wide community participates and shares the decisions to be taken.
ESA is organising a public information event on the Iris programme for all interested parties on 10-11 October 2011, in Noordwijkerhout, The Netherlands. This event is designed to brief stakeholders on the progress of the ESA studies and to encourage interaction with aviation.
