Presentations From SDLS AGW Workshop Now On Line

The workshop included presentations from ThalesAlenia Space, the European Space Agency, and Vitrociset.

SDLS is a satellite communication system concept specifically aimed at aeronautical safety communication. As such, emphasis is put on the specific requirements of Air Traffic Management applications, and on efficient use of communication resources.
The workshop addressed two particular elements of the SDLS activity: The Application Layer Gateway (AGW) prototype and the Ground Handover (GHO) demonstrator.

The SDLS concept has been continuously promoted by ESA, starting with an early feasibility study and continuing with a system demonstrator and some additional activities, two of which were the subject of the workshop.

Thales Alenia Space gave a brief overview of the overall SDLS activity, its history and achievements. In its presentation, ESA explained the "why" of AGW and GHO activities. In brief, the aim of the AGW is to mitigate the effects of network congestion by introducing gateways in fron of the satellite link, while the GHO is an example of the use of the SDLS-specific Automatic Periodic Reporting (APR) service as a broadcast service.

Vitrociset then discussed the "how" and the "what" of the SDLS Ground Hand Over (GHO) and the Application Gateway (AGW) demonstrators. A live demonstration of these systems was also given, and the audience had the opportunity to have hands-on experience with them.
