The partnership between Dublin City University and European Space Agency (ESA) is succeeding in providing the launch-pad for Irish companies to increase their engagement with emerging space-related technologies.
The European Space Agency (ESA) and Dublin City University have joined forces to establish a ‘Maker Space’ environment, which will support the development of innovative Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies for satellite communications.
12 October 2016 – The European Space Agency’s Telecoms and Integrated Applications directorate (TIA) has announced a new element of the ARTES programme, called ARTES Core Competitiveness, which merges two formerly self-standing ARTES elements, Competitiveness & Growth and Advanced Technology.
28 June 2016 – ESA has launched a new Invitation to Tender with the goal of encouraging development of low data rate satellite communications concepts that would be suitable for diverse Machine-to-Machine and Internet of Things applications.
7 March 2016 – Using GNSS for autonomous station-keeping is a significant breakthrough that should reduce operational costs and improve pointing performance of telecoms satellites. With the support of ESA, Thales Alenia Space Italia has developed a GNSS receiver module that can be hosted on a spacecraft's on-board computer.

17 December 2015 – ESA's Directorate of Telecommunications and Integrated Applications (TIA) announces some major changes to ARTES 5.1, 5.2 and 3-4. In addition, these and various other ARTES programme elements have been renamed.
2 October 2015 – Satellite monitoring of wildlife has become a critical tool for environmental research purposes. Through the ARTES programme, ESA has been supporting the development and testing of a new low-cost wildlife tag that uses satcoms technology.
26 August 2015 – ESA is making funding available to help promising European SMEs build satcom components for modular smartphones. This ARTES 5.1 ITT closes on 14 October.
