ESA is pleased to invite members of the satellite communication industry from European Member States and Canada to participate in the ARTES ScyLight Call For Ideas. ESA is looking for proposals for long-term preliminary studies and technology development-related activities.

High Altitude Pseudo Satellites (HAPS) are stratospheric platforms that stay over a fixed point on Earth from weeks to months. Capitalising on these developments, the European Space Agency is reaching out to the Telecommunication, Earth Observation and Navigation communities to present and discuss synergies between satellites and HAPS as well as to collect feedback and recommendations regarding a potential ESA HAPS programme.
8 March 2017 – The viability of deploying satcoms for rail communications is the subject of a new study prepared for the European Railway Agency by INDRA and ALG.
On 10 February 2017, the winners of first ESA Female Young Graduate Trainee (YGT) competition, organised by TIA, were presented at the annual TIA Seminar. The participants were asked to propose an innovative satellite-based Application that would be sustained by collaborative economic models, which would involve the European industry.
21 February 2017 – The large turnout for this recent event indicates tremendous interest in optical technologies within the satellite communications industry.
New templates now available for ESA's latest ARTES programme element: ScyLight
28 January 2017 – The first flight opportunity for the new SmallGEO platform, Hispasat's H36W-1 satellite, was succesfully launched from the European Spaceport at Kourou, French Guiana, in the early hours of this morning.
18 January 2017 – A special media briefing on SmallGEO and its first flight took place on Wednesday 18 January, at ESA HQ in Paris. Hispasat 36W-1 will be the first satellite to use the SmallGEO platform, marking the first partnership between ESA and the Spanish operator.
12 January 2017 – Airbus Defence & Space, which developed the European Data Relay Satellite system (EDRS) in private-public partnership with ESA, has launched the SpaceDataHighway competition and will award up to €75k to the winning idea.
20 Dec 2016 – Flight trials were recently undertaken by ESA and Inmarsat in the next stage of the ARTES Iris Precursor programme to deliver high-capacity secure digital data links via satellite.
