WIDEBAND SOFTWARE DEFINED HUB (ARTES AT 6B.056)

Description

The objective of this activity is to develop and test a prototype of a fully software-implemented broadband hub up to 5GHz instantaneous bandwidth.

Targeted Improvements: Enabling a fully software-implemented hub up to 5GHz instantaneous bandwidth, which does not exist today.

Description: The use of RF over IP has increased during the latest years for ground solutions, as it extends the natural range of a connection between a signal sourceand a RF receiving device with an unprecedented level of flexibility capable of enabling ground solutions for upcoming satellite communicationsinitiatives; hundreds of satellites in non-stationary orbitsoperatingin frequency bands sensitive to atmospheric effects, such as Ka-band or Q/V band.

This paradigm enables the virtualisation of the processing units of the ground segment, which represents an opportunity for enabling fully softwareimplementedhubs runningin cloud computing environment, being these units responsible for the management of the satellite networks regardless oftheir emplacement location. The development of this activity shall focus on the physical, link and network layers using software defined radiotechnology.Additionally, it shall identify existing cloud services and define the cloud computing requirements.

The objectives of this activity shall be achieved by the implementation of a prototype of a fully software-implemented broadband hub up to 5GHzinstantaneous bandwidth, capable of generating/acquiring Internet Protocol packets, which contain digitalised signal information.

Procurement Policy:C(2) = A relevant participation (in terms of quality and quantity) of non-primes (incl. SMEs) is required. For additional information please go to EMITS news "Industrial Policy measures for non-primes, SMEs and RD entities in ESA programmes".
