BROADBAND, HIGH Q, BULK WAVE ACOUSTIC FILTERS IN C-BAND AND BEYOND (ARTES AT 5C.403) (FORMER ON DELEGATION REQUEST)

Description

The objective of this activity is to develop, manufacture and test broadband, high Q (greater than 1000) filters based on bulk wave resonators. A 500MHz wide C-band breadboard filter shall be manufactured and the potential for using the technology in the X-band to Ku-band frequency range shall be assessed.

Targeted Improvements: Enabling technology development to replace RF cavitytype and PCB-type filters for many applications; Filter size reduction by an order of magnitude.

Description: Filters above 1 GHz with high Q are bulky and large and usually dictate the mass and footprint for front end and TTC equipment. Bulk Acoustic Wave (BAW) technology has emerged during the last decade and is becoming well established in applications with stringent requirements. BAW filtersolutions can provide acceptable insertion loss and selectivity with a small size and footprint. Recent advances of materials anddesign techniques are extending its applications beyond IF frequencies. It has been shown that shear wave propagation in solid material can provide the high Q and the strong coupling that is required. Moreover, BAW technology can offer semiconductor compatibility, which is a key element to achieve high integration of RF front-ends based on System On Chip or System In Package.

The aim of this activity is to design, manufacture and test a C-band temperature compensated BAW filter achieving at least 500 MHz bandwidth withaveryhigh Q factor to meet stringent selectivity requirements. The performance at C-band will be demonstrated at wafer and package device levels.

The activity will also evaluate the use of BAW technology in the X-band and Ku-band frequency ranges by means of suitable test-vehicles.

Procurement Policy: C2: Activities are in open competition, where a significant participation of non-LSIs is requested. For additional information please go to EMITS news "Industrial Policy measures for non-primes, SMEs and RD entities in ESA programmes".

Footnote: On Delegation Request activities will only be initiated on the explicit request of at least one National Delegation. Such request has been received.
