SATELLITE BACKHAULING PROTOTYPE FOR FUTURE NARROW BAND INTERNET OF THINGS (NB-IOT) NETWORKS (ARTES AT 6B.041)

Description

The objective of this activity is to design, develop and test a prototype mini system (gateway and terminal) capable of providing satellite backhauling services for future NB-IoT.

Targeted Improvements:Enables new satellite communication services forbackhaulingM2M and Internet-of-Things communications.

Description:Many terrestrial M2M/IoT needs are currently served with so-called LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Networks). It is however expected that the recently approved 3GPP NB-IoT standard will trigger a large-scale deployment of M2M/IoT networks using this standard, both by the incumbents and new terrestrial carriers.

Similar to the current 2G/3G/4G-backhaul - which is a significant market for satcom industry - there is a market expected for backhauling of NB-IoT networks especially for emerging countries and rural areas with low terrestrial network connectivity.

This activity aims at analysingthe latest satellite backhauling technologies and standards to design, develop and test a prototype mini system (gateway and terminal) at baseband digital level capable of providing satellite backhauling services for future NB-IoT.

The expected deliverables are:

  • Study reportcontaining an analysis of the main backhauling scenarios for NB-IoT networks.
  • Definition of the requirements to allow an efficientintegration of terrestrial NB-IoT with satellite backhaul.
  • Implementation of the solution into an existing Gateway and terminal prototype.
  • Demonstration of efficient backhauling of narrowband IoT in a representative environment using the developed hardware and software
