Objectives

Videsti is an Irish company providing products and services in the broadcast, interactive and personal television market. This project is being carried out in conjunction with our partner, The Yard, a leading Irish post-production house. The emergence of standards based consumer electronics devices for digital television featuring local storage will enable a wholly new viewer experience: Multimedia TV. The aim of the Fusion Studio project is to explore the creation and enablement of compelling and commercially attractive content for Multimedia TV. There are a number of aspects to the project. The development of a core technology component toolkit, and using that toolkit the development of a range of content creation and enablement tools. Showcase applications will be developed and demonstrated that are both interesting for the viewer and commercially attractive to broadcasters, service providers and advertisers.

The showcase applications will be deployed in a DVB-S satellite service provider environment in a pilot rollout. The value of Multimedia TV to all parties in the television broadcast chain will be demonstrated. The Fusion Studio project applications will facilitate the creation of content compliant with the DVB Multimedia Home Platform (MHP), with particular emphasis on the features enabled by the MHP-based Personal Video Recorder (PVR). This platform strongly complements satellite delivery of Multimedia TV, but it allows rich local interactivity without the explicit dependence on a return channel. Interactive television will take a major step forward with the PVR. Interacting will not involve interrupting the television experience. It will be possible to view different video streams, including those previously stored locally. Applications include targeted interactive advertisements, where the viewer can view a video clip about a particular aspect of the advertised product, and order the product, before returning to the program they were watch

Challenges

  • Compliance with appropriate standards, including current and future versions of the DVB-MHP.
  • Facilitating the creation of interactive multimedia content that can be deployed on consumer electronics devices of limited footprint and capabilities.
  • Designing intuitive processes and user interfaces for the rapid development and deployment of end-to-end Multimedia Television content.
  • Demonstrating the value of Multimedia TV to all parties in the content creation, deployment and consumption chain.
Benefits

  • Rapid creation and enablement of Multimedia Television content using familiar design interfaces and paradigms, building on existing business models and creating new revenue generating opportunities.
  • Facilitating the move to mass-market, standards based, interactive television content production and availability. Interoperability with existing content production formats and methods.
  • Ability to rapidly generate and modify revenue generating applications in response to viewer behaviour.
  • The ability of broadcasters, advertisers and post-production houses to use existing personnel for Multimedia Television content production.

Plan

The project is divided into two major phases:

  • In the first phase, the core technology toolkit and a visual authoring tool will be developed, and showcase applications will be produced compliant with current the DVB-MHP standard and beyond.
  • In the second phase, additional tools and functionality will be built out. In addition to this, a pilot rollout will be undertaken to deploy Multimedia TV content on a DVB-S service provider network, with a representative set of viewers as the target audience.
Current status

Phase 1 of the project was completed with the successful acceptance test of the first release of the Fusion Studio MHP Visual Authoring Environment.

Due to financial difficulties the prime contractor has been forced to withdraw the continutation of the project into Phase 2.

Consequently the Fusion Studio project has had to be terminated.
