M2MSatNet Realising Future Low Cost and Large Scale M2MSatellite Networks

Objectives

The objectives of this activity are: 

  • Studying next generation M2M satellite networks (potentially including upgrades of existing infrastructure) which could be realistically put into operation by 2023; 
  • Identifying System-level solutions that can support the satellite sector in capitalising on the future growth in M2M service sector; 
  • Identifying technology development needs in order to realise such future networks; 
  • Providing recommendations on operational environment like standardisation, licensing and radio regulations.

Challenges

Challenge is to find potential applications or use cases where terrestrial IoT/M2M systems are not suitable or those where satellite IoT/M2M can be provided more efficiently or cost effectively. Moreover, a satellite-based M2M system has to be defined in a way that

  • terminals can be realised in a low-cost approach,
  • the system supports massive access,
  • and systems costs shall be bound to a viable business case when considering the expected revenues.

Benefits

The activity aims at providing recommendations how a next generation M2M satellite-based system could be designed, taking into consideration

  • selected use-cases and market possibilities to establish a viable business case
  • user terminal requirements,
  • most appropriate waveform and frequencies and
  • a satellite constellation.

With these results, the components of such a system can be developed in future activities.

Current status

An analysis of potential use-cases for satellite-based M2M applications had been performed. The most promising use-cases are selected. From these, the potential revenues will be derived. These numbers will set a system design constraint. In the next steps, the selection of potential system will be analysed regarding the following technical aspect:

  • Frequency Spectrum & Regulatory Aspects
  • Space Segment Architectures
  • M2M Air-Interface
  • User Terminals
