  • DCDC for RF Equipment

    Status date: 07 December 2010

    The main objectives of this R&D project were to develop, test and qualify DC/DC converters for RF equipment. It aimed to provide an integrated DCDC for RF solution compatible with a wide range of platforms given the wide input voltage range compatibility, as well as the input EMC approach consisting of applying the most stringent of the different EMC CE/CS requirements.

    Status date: 02 December 2010

    The objective of the DSL in the Sky project was to develop the new generation of Satcom solution, implementing the fully updated DVB-RCS / DVB-S2 standard, including advanced features such as Adaptative Coding & Modulation (ACM), Dynamic Rate Adjustment (DRA), or Satlabs QoS.

  • RF Sensing Equipment in Ka Band for Eurostar 3000 Platform

    Status date: 02 December 2010

    The purpose of the present development was to adapt to EADS Astrium needs (Eurostar 3000 P/F) the equipment already developed by Thales Alenia Space for their own platform. The developed RF equipment is dedicated to be used on EUROSTAR 3000 Platform (EADS Astrium) and has to operate with one or several Ka band beacons.

  • S-Band Wide Coverage Antennas

    The objective of the study is to develop and verifiy new and competitive additions to the present set of S-band Omni Antennas. Saab sees a market demand for S-band wide coverage omni antennas which need to have adaptability of the radiation patterns as well as low NRE costs and short delivery times.

    The ConeXpress - Orbital Life Extension Vehicle (CX-OLEV) presents the operators of geostationary communications satellites ("comsats") with a pioneering opportunity to extend the revenue-earning life of their space assets by up to 10 years.

  • J-ORTIGIA: S-band Satellite Broadcasting Experimentation Campaign through NICT ETS-VIII satellite

    Status date: 18 November 2010

    One of the key objectives of the J-ORTIGIA project was to evolve the receiver setup developed in the ORTIGIA framework in terms of performance, RF tuning, and alignment with the DVB-SH standard. Phase 1 encompasses a series of preliminary analysis and Phase 2 the integration of handheld mock-up and vehicular terminals.

  • IEMN

    Status date: 03 November 2010

    The Integrated Emergency Medicine Network (IEMN) seeks to develop, implement and test a multi-tier emergency service to serve as the basis of a province-wide emergency medicine network. IEMN provides the following emergency response capacities within Newfoundland and Labrador (Canada): giving rural and community health care services direct access to emergency medicine physicians and resources within a province-wide network (with real-time video consultation and medical data transfer facilities), allow continuous communications and patient data transfer between emergency response staff and the emergency facility during an emergency situation, creating a mobile emergency response facility that can quickly be deployed to a disaster location to extend the facilities and capabilities of the IEMN to the emergency response personnel.

  • Development of Diagnostic Tool - DIATOOL

    Status date: 23 June 2010

    DIATOOL will be a stand-alone commercial program performing advanced electromagnetic processing of measured antenna data. It will read the measured field and compute the extreme near-field or the currents on the antenna surface, without the fundamental constraints of the traditional measurement systems.

  • Development and Qualification of an Advanced Pilot Tone Injection Unit (PTIU) and L-Band Test Interface Unit (LTIU) for Next Generation Processed Payloads on Geo-Mobile Communications Satellites

    Status date: 22 June 2010

    The first targeted market opportunity for the PTIU and LTIU products is the Inmarsat XL payload currently being developed by EADS Astrium UK, which is to be embarked on the first European Alphabus platform. COM DEV has provided similar products for the Inmarsat 4 series of satellites, however these products must now be redesigned to meet the requirements of the new integrated digital processors and the new Alphabus platform interfaces.

  • SASS-2IP

    Status date: 20 May 2010

    The SASS-2IP project objective is to develop and implement a Satellite Terminal IP Interface Unit (STIU) for the interconnection of alarm- and security equipment to satellite interactive terminals, enhance the SASS signalling protocols and software to support IP traffic control for any 3rd party security applications connected to the STIU including the provisioning of guaranteed bandwidth on-demand with multiple priority levels (standard, high, emergency) and validate the functional and operational performance for an innovative alarm- and surveillance application.

    Status date: 11 May 2010

    mrStream is dedicated to develop an application platform for the contribution and distribution of video and data content to get greater insight into consumer attitudes and behaviour than is possible from the techniques and technologies currently used by Market Research agencies and their clients. The mrStream applications platform collects, links, interprets and publishes consumer and social insight data using advanced media format with high impact potentials for the end users.

  • PocketSAT User Terminal Phase 3 Development

    Status date: 26 February 2010

    The objective of the project is to develop a miniature satellite communications user terminal platform known as 'PocketSAT'. This platform is aimed at L-band mobile satcom services, including hand-held, land-mobile and maritime. Phase 3 is to extend the PocketSAT developments in another direction: private packet-data networks operating over leased satellite capacity.

  • Mobile Telecom Payload - RF Measurement System

    Status date: 05 January 2010

    Mobile satellite-based communications systems will be introduced into the markets in increasing numbers. Satellite transponders carrying traffic of such systems demand challenging capabilities both from the transponder payload and from the test systems used to validate them. This project aims to capture the requirements of a generic MTP-RMS that supports testing and verifying mobile communications payloads.

  • Ka-Band Filters and Multiplexers

    Status date: 16 December 2009

  • L-Band ONETs

    Status date: 30 October 2009

    The objective of the project was to develop, manufacture and qualify two L-Band ONETs for EADS Astrium satellites and the US market. ONETs are high power devices used for multi-point telephony applications. In this case, two 8x8 matrices were developed. In one of them the mass and the PIM were the critical points, whereas the second one was developed with the high power requirements of the US market in mind.

  • N-GAP: Norspace Generic Analogue Processor

    Status date: 29 October 2009

    In commercial programs, short delivery schedule is mandatory. This is normally in contradiction to the need for application specific requirements that need special solutions for each case. For most programs Norspace has experienced that development of hybrids normally define the minimum delivery time. The key objective in the project was to prepare lower level generic design blocks that meet the requirements for the next opportunity.

  • Multimedia Ground Terminals and Equipment: End-to-End Performance and Security Enhancements

    The End to End Performance and Security Enhancements program is an incremental, evolutionary development of Advantech Satellite Networks´ successful product line of DVB-RCS hubs and terminals.     The Integrated Digital Overlay (Indigo) is to develop the next generation of technology for satellite-delivered video programming and data for Enterprise and Broadcast customers. Indigo intends to develop a digital signage product suite to enable customers to use the Captive Audience Networking medium. This demands innovation in the central distribution hub, remote-end equipment and distribution. In the Broadcast market (including directto- home DTH), Indigo defines and optimises media ingest, digital asset management and distribution.

    The contract originally specified design and development of an LNB/OMT/transmitter for operation at 13GHz receive and 12.75-13.25GHz transmit. A subsequent contract change note 001 re-specified the development of a revised version of the existing Invacom transmitter operating in the 14.0-14.5GHz band.

    Status date: 16 June 2009

    The Mayflower Project employs satellite multicasting IP over DVB and Internet return channel to enable the delivery of university courses in Medicine using on-line and off-line applications built on Open Software. Two groups of participants employed the system. One group was based in Italy and was led by the University of Perugia, which focused on nursing. The other group was based in Norway and led by the University of Tromsoe, which focused on nursing and medicine. Students attended Perugia University courses either from home or the University classrooms.

    The pilot project has established an application supporting direct connection between the Dutch AEX exchange in Amsterdam and any worldwide (Internet) Broker or Trading Professional. The electronic communication is IP over satellite to guarantee simultaneous availability of the trading information at all client sites and to enforce ad hoc security protection in the link.

    E-Screen has provided the first pan- European Satellite based Digital Cinema operation, including a business deployment phase, where projections open to paying public of a diversified range of digital contents delivered via satellite are performed. E-Screen sees the joint involvement of service providers, technology suppliers and, above all, of the Cinema industry, experimenting with the future business models and practices that will lead the transition toward Digital Cinema and addressing the technology areas that are involved in the implementation of a satellite based service chain.

    Status date: 02 June 2009

    Using the results of the DELTASS project, I-DISCARE aims to offer a service to operational users community first on a free basis and after on a commercial basis. The target is to create an I-DISCARE Service Provider structure and initiate its activities. The I-DISCARE project has the ambition to reach this target by achieving the following 3 main tasks: implement a satellite-based support to logistic and healthcare for medical operations in isolated, mobile and disaster context, demonstrate and validate the viability of this IDISCARE service by defining a Pilot Utilisation Plan and by using some real field utilisation involving end users, prepare and consolidate a Strategic Plan (SP) for the IDISCARE service implementation.

    The Distributed Satellite Broadband project seeks to develop secure and authenticated methods by which satellite delivered broadband access can be provided and shared amongst a number of disparate users. The goal is to reduce the cost of satellite broadband for each individual user and enable people in rural areas without ADSL access to obtain a broadband internet connection, which otherwise they would not be able to afford.

  • NESA

    Status date: 02 June 2009

    The NESA (Next generation Emergency Satellite Assistance) project is dedicated to on-field radiology, carried out employing an X-ray apparatus onboard an ambulance. The X-ray images are transferred via satellite for remote analysis, together with accessory clinical information. Thanks to the capabilities provided by the NESA platform, the emergency vehicle can bring patients directly to the most appropriate destination (including the emergency department), optimizing timing and saving resources. In many cases transportation can be avoided.

    ESA's concept for an Integrated Space Technologies Operational System (ISTOS) Wide Area Network is designed to improve the utilisation of space technologies by end users working in the field of emergency management, by allowing to efficiently interconnect emergency application users to data and services providers, using integrated space technologies in telecommunications, earth observation and navigation.
