The objective of this activity is to design, manufacture and test textile flexible antennas (or arrays) for smart clothing SATCOM applications. Targeted Improvements:Enabling technology for smart clothing SATCOM applications. Description: Textile antennas haveenabled "smart clothes" with embedded body-worn antenna systems and find applications for sport outfits, emergency workers' outfit,medical and space suits. The technology has the potential to enable applications such as search and rescue systems, GPS/Galileo satellite navigation based worn telematics applications as well as terminal antennas for personal satellite communications, however today commercial satellite textile antennas are not available. This activity will develop material and assembly technologies and a wirelessconnected textile antenna, including a wireless transceiver, will be designed, manufactured and tested. The design will take into account the electromagnetic interaction between the antenna, wearable units and the person as well as environmental operation conditions. Important design considerations will be weight and maintenance. A field test campaign will be carried out comprising of personal devices linked via the textile antenna to a satellite network.
