Inmarsat Developer Conference

Registration is now open for the second Inmarsat Developer Conference taking place later this month at the Park Plaza Hotel, London. The event  includes a keynote from ESA's Matt Taylor and a dedicated session on ARTES support.

Airbus's new feed array for next-gen multi-beam antennas

1 February 2016 – Multiple spot-beam antennas are becoming an increasingly important feature of today's telecom satellites. In acknowledgement of this, Airbus Defence and Space UK initiated the development of the Large Ku-band Multi-spot Feed Array (LMFA) with the support of ESA through the ARTES Competitiveness & Growth programme.

Novel AIS receivers on their way

1 February 2016 – A new satellite to be launched in April by the Norwegian Space Centre (NSC) will include two AIS receivers that will improve the identification and tracking of ships anywhere on the seas.

Breakthrough in SAT-AIS antenna design

19 January 2016 – A new SAT-AIS antenna developed with the support of ESA combines higher-gain with a smaller footprint. Clever engineering has reduced its overall size so that up to five could be hosted on a single cubic-metre minisatellite.

SmallGEO successfully passes mechanical tests

13 January 2016 — The Hispasat AG1 satellite, based on the new SmallGEO platform, has successfully completed the first step of the environmental test campaign. The team will continue the ground test programme to complete the design and performance verifications prior to shipping the satellite to Kourou, French Guiana, for launch later this year.

The objective of this activity is to design, manufacture and test an Engineering Model of a compact Ku-Band output multiplexer with 16 channels of 120 W each.
NF-P/L Study

State-of-the-art and future telecom satellites significantly grow in dimensions and in complexity demanding for new measurement approaches of P/L performances e.g. aiming on reuse of existing and in space limited test facilities. In the NF-P/L study methodologies were developed and validated using near-field antenna measurement technologies being known for their unique and compact measurement dimensions and analysis capabilities. The study was conducted by the Antenna Measurement Technology Group of Airbus DS in Munich and of the Central Assembly Integration & Test Department of Airbus DS in Toulouse from November 2013 to November 2015.

The need for bandwidth in satellite communications and broadcasting is constantly increasing. It is foreseen that, in some locations, the capacity at the Ka-band alone will not be sufficient to allow for the emergence of new applications such as broad-band internet, satellite-HDTV, live video, telemedicine, interactive gaming, video conferencing, and others. The exploitation of higher frequency band (Q/V) will offer a substantial increase in the capacity for the needs of both public and private sectors using satellite services. It is expected that Q/V-band will first be used for gateway access.
