ASMS/SPSC 2016
5-7 September 2016, Palma de Mallorca, Spain

Learn about recent advances and emerging technologies in mobile, broadband and broadcast satellite communication systems at this year's joint ASMS/SPSC conference, of which ESA is a co-sponsor.

2016 Industry Space Days
20 - 22 September 2016, ESTEC (Noordwijk, The Netherlands)

Industry Space Days (ISD) are organised by ESA to bring together the main European players in the space sector. The main purpose is to increase the involvement of SMEs in space activities and to foster cross-fertilisation between the different actors in the entire space sector.

The 22nd Ka and Broadband Communications Conference
17-20 October 2016, Cleveland, Ohio (USA)

These year's theme Communications Satellite Systems: A Look Back at the First 50 Years and Thoughts on the Next 50. ESA is a co-sponsor of this event. Registration now open

Additive Manufacturing for RF/Microwave Hardware
Industry Days: 22-23 November 2016, ESTEC (Noordwijk, the Netherlands)

During this multi-disciplinary two-day event at ESTEC, participants will have the opportunity to explore the use of additive manufacturing techniques for RF/microwave hardware and possible solutions. The call for abstracts and pre-registration are now open.

Workshop on Microwave Technology and Techniques
3-5 April 2017, ESTEC (Noordwijk, the Netherlands)

The next edition of the Workshop on Microwave Technology and Techniques (MTT) has been announced. The call for abstracts is now open.

News

ARTES enables mass production of coaxial circulators and isolators in Germany

15 July 2016 – German space tech company TESAT has developed robust, automised processes for the mass production of coaxial interface circulators and isolators for satellites. Some 10,000 units have now been produced this way, making the new product line an unparalleled success.

New heat dissipater keeps satellites cool in space

13 July 2016 – With support from ESA, a European consortium led by Airbus DS has developed a novel Deployable Panel Radiator that will provide much-needed additional radiating capacity for highly dissipative payloads, such as those planned for the next generation of very high throughput satellites.

Makerspace for the Internet of Things - powered by satellite

28 June 2016 – ESA has launched a new Invitation to Tender with the goal of encouraging development of low data rate satellite communications concepts that would be suitable for diverse Machine-to-Machine and Internet of Things applications.

Satcoms for the Internet of Things

30 May 2016 – With the support of ESA, TSAT AS (Norway) has demonstrated and tested a new satellite communications platform prototype designed for service providers who are keen to tap into the narrowband Internet of Things market.

TESAT pioneers 3D Printing for RF components

26 May 2015 – TESAT-Spacecom, one of Germany’s largest space technology companies, has pioneered the application of additive manufacturing techniques, also known as 3D printing, for the production of microwave components.

Latest Projects

LNA-TEC
Status Date: 21 July 2016
The Radio Frequency performances of LNA components on-board telecommunication satellites are proportional to the temperature at which they are kept. The lower it is, the better are the performances. This project focuses on the implementation of a Thermo Electric Cooler (TEC) for the temperature control of the component, optimizing masses, size and power consumption, outside the LNA hermetic sealing.
Tracking System for antennas with boom
Status Date: 20 July 2016
Telecom satellite missions with multibeam coverage up to Ka-band embark large aperture antennas with increased focal length and/or large reflector clearance. An Antenna Deployment and Pointing System (A-DPS) is required to accommodate such antennas on Eurostar 3000. The study objective is to assess the reflector assembly impacts on satellite pointing performances, and define the required Antenna Tracking System (ATS) product evolutions to meet the mission pointing requirements.
QUP
Status Date: 19 July 2016
The Ka/Q-Band Up Converter Programme objective is to complement and to further strengthen RSE’s converter and receiver products by performing this activity in the Q/V Converter product area.
RFMLI
Status Date: 11 July 2016
One of the problems of traditional MLI is the reflection of radio (particularly microwave) frequencies in its metallized surface. Such reflection equates to the one of a perfect electric conductor, and poses a significant problem to the communication branch of the mission. In this study HPS attempts to develop an MLI which is able to manage such reflections, and minimize them to an insignificant level.
Next Generation Secure Satellite Network (NGSSN)
