OUTDOOR UNIT (ODU) FOR SATCOM NEXT GENERATION NON-GEO SATELLITES (ARTES AT 7B.037)

Description

To design, develop and test a plug-and-play, self-scanning outdoor unit for the consumer market.

Targeted Improvements:This is an enabling technology development for a new outdoor unit.

Description: There are commercial initiatives based on the use of hundreds of small satellites in low earth and medium earth orbit (LEO/MEO) capable to provide global broadband coverage with minimum service latency.

A key element of the system for a commercial success in the consumer market is a plug-and-play fixed user terminal in Ku- /Ka-band. The terminal needs to be small, highly integrated, easy to install, capable of a seamless pointing and handover between passing satellites, and offered with a plug-and-play interface.

The activity aims at defining an antenna solution, which is expected to meet such needs. The solution might adopt any of the latest antenna technologies like liquid crystal, metamaterial, phased array, retro-directive, hybrid technologies or other ones.

The deliverables should include:

  • Report containing the technical requirements,
  • Report containing the analysis of the available technologies and justification for the selection for implementation,
  • Design report submitted for review,
  • Development and manufacturing of a reduced scale prototype with all critical functions described above,

The prototype should be experimentally verified in a laboratory environment.

Procurement Policy: C(2) = A relevant participation (in terms of quality and quantity) of non-primes (incl. SMEs) is required. For additional information please go to EMITS news "Industrial Policy measures for non-primes, SMEs and RD entities in ESA programmes".
