ESA and Satlabs Group Organise DVB-RCS Workshop

Detailed presentations will be given regarding on-going or recently completed activities funded by ESA in the domain of IP networking and network management techniques for interactive satellite systems. The workshop is open only to member states and Satlabs.

Also scheduled are presentations by Newtec on results from the EU VIVALDI project focusing on end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) for DVB-RCS networks, and Keletron will discuss results from the DELOS project, funded by ESA, aimed at developing a generic DVB-RCS terminal architecture.

The preliminary list of presentations is as follows:

Applications Layer QoS in DVB-RCS Systems
This project provides an overall network performance characterization for different configurations of a DiffServ/DVB-RCS integration architecture in function of different architectural configurations, network loads and traffic profiles. In particular, it identifies the most adequate mappings between DiffServ traffic classes and DVB-RCS MAC capacity types. Tuning criteria for DiffServ and DVB-RCS configuration parameters to optimise overall performances are also proposed.

IP-Friendly Cross-Layer Optimization of Adaptive Satellite Systems
The project focuses on the novel DVB-S2 standard, which uses channel state information to adapt coding and modulation to the time-varying physical layer conditions experienced by a specific user. The goal of the project is to investigate how providing cross-layer information may help upper layers to take full advantage of this innovative physical layer solution. The study provides a first feedback on upper layer behaviour and performance in this novel system, both with and without applying cross-layer solutions. The performance evaluation of the two selected cross-layer mechanism (QoS queuing and TCP splitting), using an emulation platform, has shown that they significantly provide many improvements in comparison to layered approaches. The study ultimately proposes a cost/benefit analysis of the studied technology respect to the traditional ones.

Harmonization of DVB-RCS Management and Control Planes (HM&C)
This project supports SatLabs in addressing the next step on harmonisation of management and control planes for DVB-RCS, including the incorporation of a Connection Control Protocol (C2P). The proposed specifications, and the relevant management and control system architecture, are devised to support full interoperability among multi-vendor RCSTs operating in different DVB-RCS system scenarios (star/mesh/transparent/regenerative, mono/multi beam).

VIVALDI: Advancing Interactive Broadband Satellite Access by Optimal Convergence of Session based Services over DVB-RCS(EC IST programme)
VIVALDI helped advance the state-of-the-art of interactive broadband satellite access through optimal convergence of session-based services over the European standard DVB-RCS. VIVALDI developed new architecture, technologies and protocols ensuring that the satellite segment interoperates transparently and efficiently with the end-to-end IP networks at large.

Design and Development of a Generic DVB-RCS Terminal Architecture (DELOS)
The project DELOS has developed an IP-core to host the protocol part of the DVB-RCS terminal functionality. This single, generic architectural component will enable the easy integration of DELOS on any kind of Integrated Circuits, thereby minimizing DVB-RCS terminal development and manufacturing cycle and costs.

The workshop will begin at 08:45 in the Newton 2 Conference Room at ESTEC. For registration and other details see the links located in the right column of this page.
