Newtec (BE) has announced the satellite industry's first VSAT modem to support DVB-S2X, the new transmission standard that was adopted in 2014. The company presented the new modem, the MDM5000, at two important satellite industry trade shows this month, SATELLITE 2016 and CABSAT 2016. The new terminal was developed with the support of ESA through the Competitiveness & Growth element of the ARTES programme.
According to Newtec, the MDM5000 is capable of receiving forward carriers of up to 140 MHz, processing over 200 Mbps of throughput. On the return channel, it supports SCPC, MF-TDMA and Newtec's Mx-DMA, at speeds up to 75 Mbps. With the new unit, Newtec is targeting the high-end mobility, IP trunking and High Throughput Satellite (HTS) markets.
DVB-S2X is an extension of the DVB-S2 standard. It offers higher throughput and improved spectral efficiencies, and thus can support larger numbers of users, providing operators with additional capabilities for developing new applications and services. DVB-S2X can be deployed seamlessly across the current generation of transparent satellite transponders in orbit, thereby improving rate of returns on existing capital investments.
“For service providers who target high-end vertical markets such as cruise ships, oil rigs, or cellular backhaul, the MDM5000 is a game-changer,” says Kevin McCarthy, VP of Market Development at Newtec. “Up to now, the only alternative was to combine multiple low-end MF-TDMA modems, or resort to expensive SCPC circuits to address the extreme throughput demands of these high-value markets. The MDM5000, paired with our Mx-DMA technology, will bring welcome relief to these customers and strategically position them for the transition to HTS.”
