All interested parties are asked to confirm their participation by email to marie-benjamine.moothien@esa.int as soon as possible. See the complete agenda by clicking on the agenda link found under Related Links in the column to the right.

Iris, Element 10 of the ARTES Programme, is the ESA programme to develop a new Air-Ground communication system for Air Traffic Management as the satellite-based communication solution for the SESAR programme. Iris Phase A consisted of conducting dedicated studies to define a new communication standard and the most efficient satellite solution to provide the service to airspace users. A total of four studies were conducted by different consortia to compile the most comprehensive knowledge available. Additional studies were conducted in parallel regarding specific technical matters and their web pages can be found by clicking on the related links located in the right column of this page.

Two consortia known as ICOS and Phoenix focused on how to design the communication system. The ICOS consortium is being lead by Indra, with contributions from Rockwell Collins, SELEX, Thales Alenia Space Italy and France, AIRTEL and ARINC. EADS Astrium Services GmbH leads the Phoenix consortium which includes Astrium SAS, EADS Astrium GmbH, SITA, TriaGnoSys, Audens ACT, Vitrociset and Honeywell.

Consortia analysing the satellite system required to provide the communication service are known as AVISAT and Samara. AVISAT is lead by EADS Astrium Services GmbH and includes EADS Astrium Satellites SAS, EADS Astrium GmbH, SITA, Vitrociset, TriaGnoSys, Audens ACT, Norspace, Carlo Gavazzi Space, IABG, Skysoft, EADS Casa Espacio and Deimos Space. Consultants to this consortium include Dutch Space, Iridium and Airbus. Thales Alenia Space Italy is leading the Samara consortium and is working with Thales Alenia Space France, Thales Alenia Space España, Selex, OHB System, Indra, AIRTEL, NPO-PM, Conplan and Frequentis.

Phase Two of the Iris Programme will start in 2009 with the issue of the Phase B ITT for the Iris project and parallel ITT's for support by Satellite Operators and Service Providers. It focuses on the development of a new satellite-based communication system including a new satellite communication standard, which performance will be validated end-to-end with a subset of the infrastructure required for the future European ATM System.
