Workshop reviews R&D activities with DVB-RCS

The workshop included summaries of ongoing and future projects related to DVB-RCS in the framework of the Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems (ARTES) 1 and 5 programmes.

Other presentations were made by Newtec on results from the EU VIVALDI project focusing on end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) for DVB-RCS networks, and Keletron regarding the DELOS project, funded by ESA, aimed at developing a generic DVB-RCS terminal architecture.

"I found the workshop very interesting. As the only open multi-vendor VSAT standard, DVB-RCS creates interest in a number of different user communities and education institutions," said Petter Amundsen from Verisat. "The presentations highlighted issues that can improve system performance, present systems as well as present possible solutions and improvements for the future evolvement of the standard. I found the presentations valuable for ongoing and future activities related to DVB-RCS technology."

Several ESA-sponsored projects funded under ARTES 1 were also presented. They included:
·  Applications Layer QoS in DVB-RCS Systems given by Lorena Albiol Schnitger and Francisco Recacha from Indra Espacio
·  IP-friendly Cross-Layer Optimization of Adaptive Satellite Systems given by David Fernández, Joan Manuel Cebrián  from Indra Espacio, Maria Angeles Vázquez of UAB and Jordi Mata of UPC
· Harmonization of DVB-RCS Management and ControlPplanes (HM&C) presented by Ana Yun Garcia, Fernando Vallejo Lázaro,  and Paolo Conforto  of Thales Alenia Space.

"All of the presentations provided interesting and detailed results on the end-to-end performance of the fixed broadband DVB-RCS systems such as the IP and Application layer which is strongly appreciated by the satcom community and Satlabs in particular," said Maria Guta, senior engineer with ESA Telecom. "New ideas on how to enhance these systems performance emerged. This provided us with some useful suggestions for follow up activities and issues to be studied in the area of convergence of fixed/mobile/broadcast systems."
