The objective of the activity is to design, manufacture and test an integrated W-band transceiver Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit (RFIC) configurable as transmitter and receiver covering the 71-86 GHz band for aeronautical satcom applications. Targeted Improvements: Enable satellite aeronautical broadband services in W-band. Description: The maturity of Silicon technologies allows for the implementation of multifunctional and reconfigurable circuits in higher frequencies (above Q/V) enabling the use of those frequencies for various satellite telecommunications applications. In this activity, a multifunctional Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit (RFIC) will be designed in a suitable process, such as SiGe or GaAs to allow for low cost manufacturing. The development is targeting the aeronautical market although this could apply to other market segments. The transceiver will allow high-speed baseband data generated in an aircraft/spacecraft to be modulated to the appropriate W-band (uplink/downlink, i.e. 71-76 GHz or 81-86 GHz). Likewise, the transceiver will allow the high-speed data modulated in the W-band to be down-converted to one of two selectable outputs:1) Ka band to allow direct re-routing to Ka-band downlink;2) low IF to allow for direct demodulation. The RFIC will include a LO generationsub-circuit (VCO, frequency divider, frequency multipliers, etc.), an IQ up-converter and an IQ down-converter, an amplifier capable of driving external HPA MMIC and a low-noise amplifier. The final breadboard will demonstrate the functionality of the RFIC in allpossible configurations, conditioned by external circuitry and external HPA and LNA. Within this activity, a roadmap for "designformanufacture" of W-band transceiver RFIC in package for mass production shall be established.
