DVB ENERGY SAVING DELIVERY OF CONTENT (ARTES AT 3A.201)

Description

Objective: The objective of the activity is to design, develop and test protocols and system level approaches for energy saving video content distribution in satellite telecommunication networks. A testbed will be developed to evaluate the energy savings achievedin real networks considering the different video codecs, air interfaces and video quality. The output shall be available to the DVBstandardisation EADC (Energy Aware Delivery and Consumption) working group.Targeted Improvements:Energy reduction of on-ground digital processing hardware up to 50%Description: In satellite systems there are several trade-offs to be performed between energy savings and performance. Currently, the focus is put on spectral efficiency. However, this implies the use of highly efficient but also energy-hungry modulation schemes. There is a request by users and governments to implement energy saving measurements (i.e., EU's directive on energy efficiency 2018/2002) and satellite systems must also take their part. Furthermore, with the current excess in bandwidth capacity, the optimisation of spectral efficiency at expense of higher power consumption is questionable. As there are many trade-offs between throughput, energy use and efficiency across a satellite system, in order to make an informed decision aroundtechnical recommendations and specifications, a testbed will be developed to model and assess options to reduce the energy consumption of on-ground digital processing hardware. The testbed will be configurable for different network sizes, satellite performances, video codecs, air interfaces, number of channels per carrier, video quality and all other parameters typical in a broadcast network.Performance and energy consumption of Television Receive Only (TVRO) receivers and other types of user terminals will be assessed and impacts on the satellite transponder operation will be studied. Provision of testbed and quantitative data to assist with evaluation of energy saving techniques proposed by industry in the frame of DVB standardisation.
