QoS in DVB-RCS demonstrator - IP Networking 2004

Alenia Spazio is coordinating an ARTES 1 study on Integrated Resources And QoS Management for DVB-RCS Networks, involving the participation of DLR and University of Tor Vergata in Rome. The
presentation will cover both the study phase and the demonstration activities of the project.

The study phase has defined a number of end-to-end different scenarios: one case study is built on already flying satellites,
embarking transparent payload or layer 1 regenerative on board
processors; another case study, suitable for early availability, adopts a
regenerative payload, built around a QoS unaware T circuit switch that
supports mesh connectivity in a multi spot beam communication
scenario; the third case study is built on a new generation on board
processor, capable of QoS aware switching, buffering and scheduling.
The study phase has also defined QoS-oriented interoperation of
Terrestrial and DVB-RCS Satellite segments and this will be presented
with reference to the mapping between IntServ and DVB-RCS and
between GRIP enhanced DiffServ architecture and DVB-RCS.
The IP level QoS evaluation results will be described in terms of the
key parameters, measured and statistically evaluated over the test
bed, End-to end Delay, Packet Loss, Delay Variation and Throughput.
More, the results will be presented for the performance evaluation
performed for test scenarios without QoS support (i.e. only best effort
(BE) INTERNET traffic), considered as the benchmark, and the test
scenarios with QoS support at end-to-end level scenario, including
IntServ/RSVP model at the edge of the sub-network and enhanced
DiffServ/GRIP, in the core sub-network.
