AGILE KA-BAND TRANSMIT FILTERS FOR COMPACT FLYAWAY USER TERMINALS (ARTES AT REF. 7A.040)

Description

The objective of this activity is to design, develop and test a Ka-band filter enabling compact flyaway user terminals operations across regions and frequencies.

Targeted Improvements: Alternative tuneable filters could provide mass and size reductionof about 30% at terminal level.

Description:

The flyaway terminal market is demanding for new solutions able to quickly change region and reconfigure the terminal for a different spot-beam or satellite, possibly at a different frequency. These terminals must be compact, foldable, and ideally transportable as carry-on or check-in baggage.

The provision of flexibility on the frequency band leads to the design of broadband terminals using bulky filter banks, becoming a resource waste in terms of equipment count, mass and packaging oncethe operational frequency gets set. Flyaway terminals could greatly benefit using smaller, lighter, tuneable filters technologies that could reduce the overall size and cost of the flyaway terminals, with negligible or no penalties on the overall RF performance.

The objective of this activity is to analyse latest tuneable filter technologies to replace bulky filter banks, and thenuse the selected technology to design, develop and test a Ka-band filter enabling compact flyaway user terminals operations across regions and frequencies.

The expected deliverables are:

  • Study report showing latest tuneable filters technologies available.
  • A tuneable Ka-Bandfilter prototype requiring a high quality factor (>1000) and medium-power levels (> 10 W) targeting at a competitive unit lower insize and weight than a conventional filter bank.
  • Performance validation report of the prototype in an operational environment.
