REAL-TIME DEMONSTRATION OF ERASURE CORRECTING CODE FOR OPTICAL FEEDER LINKS (ARTES 4.0 SL SPL 3C.048)

Description

The objective of the activity is to develop and test a real time 100 Gbps erasure code (both coder and decoder components) for optical feeder link protection.Targeted Improvements:Ensure high availability nominally required in feeder links by exceeding 99.5% of link availability due to atmospheric turbulence.Description:The use of terrestrial COTS optical transceivers in optical ground-space and space to space link will enable high throughput optical communication links by reusing highly integrated and size weight and power (SWaP) efficient components. Even though COTS components already implement advanced FEC schemes with high netcode gains, this may not be enough to counteract the slow fading due to the optical turbulence which, especially in the uplink direction, may severely impact the link availability eventually degrading the end-user QoS. To improve the optical link availability and protect data from deep fades due to optical turbulence, an additional SoC/FPGA implementing packet-based time diversity techniques, i.e. erasure correcting codes, can be employed on-board and interfaced to the COTS transceivers. This activity will develop and implement a real time 100 Gbps erasure code for optical feeder link protection. The developed components will be tested in a real-time testbed to validate the baseline design and the achieved improvements.
