    A novel electrically coupled and contactless rotary sensor for angle measurement up to 0.01 degrees of resolution. The product is an attractive alternative to traditional potentiometer and optical sensors with excellent resolution of accuracy at extreme temperatures and radiation environments.

    Thales prepared the next generation of S-Band TWTs with an output power of 500W which is double compared of today’s available products in addition to a large margin to multipaction. The interface and the specification are similar to today’s product respecting the new output power. As far as possible Thales used known materials and technologies in order to keep their long heritage. The product TL2500 enriches the portfolio of Thales.

  • Generic Sub-elements and Ka-band LNA Development

    Status date: 02 November 2015

    This development is intended as a further improvement and extension of the RUAG Space product range of Frequency Converters and Receivers for telecom payloads, covering frequency bands from C-band to Ka-band. These products are designed in a modular way in which generic sub-elements are used to build up the different equipment versions. With this development separate Ka-Band LNA units are included in the RUAG Space product family for telecom payloads, which has been requested by customers.

  • Ka-Band Downconverter

    Status date: 30 October 2015

    A modular Ka-band Down-converter equipment based on a multi-chip MMIC hybrid implementation for the RF section, using a single piece multi-cavity Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic (LTCC) packaging technology, and a conventional PCB based DC/DC Converter power supply section. Several individual modules can be stacked together onto a mechanical fixing chassis/frame as required for individual spacecraft system requirements.

    A Ku-Band TCR antenna with an elliptical radiation pattern has been developed. Some satellite manufacturers use this type of antenna as main TCR antenna, complemented with secondary antennas.

  • Signalhorn Customer Portal

    Status date: 30 September 2015

    Signalhorn is developing a web based customer portal to enable its customers to view and manage all aspects of their relationship with Signalhorn. It will provide an interface to the systems that Signalhorn uses to manage its customers’ accounts, networks and services. The portal will provide Signalhorn with a value-added service and a key differentiator. Key features include: access to near-real-time network performance and availability information; reporting of historical network status in standard formats; a trouble-ticketing system through which faults can be handled through to resolution; key information on networks, service, supplier contacts, SLAs and billing all in one place.

    Status date: 17 September 2015

    The purpose of this study is to focus on the satellite physical TM acquisition algorithm, especially in terms of management of TM acquisitions resolution and frequency. This allows having the necessary and sufficient information, for satellite operation, depending on the status of equipment (off / nominal / investigation) and satellite (nominal / emergency). From a set of requirements deduced from in-flight experience, a demonstrator unit has been implemented succesfully, based on a programmable logic component (FPGA), in order to allow algorithms testing on simulated or “real” (in flight) spacecraft telemetry

  • Antenna Pointing Optimisation System

    Status date: 31 August 2015

    The objective of the project is, building on the Inmarsat 4 experience, to improve the system performance in order to meet more stringent pointing requirements of large deployable reflectors (12 m), in particular by introducing electronic beam steering compensation. The first application of this enhanced pointing system is on Alphasat.

  • Ka-Band TC OMUX

    Status date: 23 July 2015

    Thales Alenia Space France is looking for solutions to improve its competitiveness in terms of Ka-band equipment, payloads and satellites. As far as Ka-band output filtering is concerned, use of Temperature Compensated OMUX is foreseen. This new technology leads to an improvement of the input power limitation, footprint, useful bandwidth and electrical in band performances The five channels Ka band TC OMUX qualification allows to increase the competitiveness of Thales Alenia Space products by fulfilling identified customer requirements. Those new needs are mainly concerning HDTV application with very high power OMUX (340W / channel).

  • SBGM QM2

    Status date: 10 June 2015

    SBGM is the acronym for the fully qualified RUAG Sealed Brush Gear Motor. The mechanism is mainly dedicated as in orbit motion control and actuation for solar array panels, but can also be used for other applications where a robust, simple and space qualified actuator is required. In the frame of the project, the actuator, consisting of a motor and a planetary gear, was developed and qualified for the deployment motorisation and speed regulation of the high power solar array for the Thales Alenia Space Spacebus used for commercial telecommunication satellites.

  • Modular Top Floor Antenna - Phase II

    Status date: 29 May 2015

    Modular Top Floor Antenna is a new design concept for Top Floor antennas that gives priority to the modularity of the support structure. This improved design allows boarding a variable number of antennas with minimum modifications of the structure, reducing in this way the planning and cost of this product.

  • Extendable Thruster Module Assembly / Deployable Pointing System

    EHP and Airbus Defence & Space are currently developing a new generation of Extendable Thruster Pointing Mechanism to improve the capabilities of its existing Civil Telecommunications spacecraft platforms. The Extendable Thruster Pointing Mechanism’s, is one of the main enablers allowing an intensive and efficient use of electric propulsion on Eurostar 3000 telecommunications satellites, both for the orbit raising phase (EOR) and the station keeping manoeuvers

    Cobham’s Adhoc Mesh Radio Over Satellite System (CAMROSS) can provide a team of users with adhoc communications, supporting voice, data and tracking, from a remote location with no existing terrestrial communications. Employing satellite communications it can be taken anywhere and setup in minutes. This low cost system is designed for first responders, security forces and professional applications.

  • HiSAT 2

    Status date: 12 May 2015

    The product developed in the frame of this activity is a Ku-band phased array antenna for the Land-mobile segment. The antenna combines a small form factor, low-profile lightweight and reliable performance thanks to the electronic elevation scanning.

    Status date: 07 May 2015

    AlN is an interesting new material for TWTs. Nevertheless, the requirements for space, like long-term stability and reliability are stringend for the AlN and need to be secured. This requires a good understanding of the material and the knowledge of the complete processing, including the material source. Long-term reliability had been fostered by a common approach – together with the supplier.

  • Payload Interface Unit (PLIU)

    Status date: 23 April 2015

    The PLIU is a unit containing command and acquisition channels of standard type, like High Level Commands and Thermistor acquisition channels. It contains power switches for heater control and stepper motor drivers. The interface to a central computer consists of a dual redundant Mil-Std-1553B bus. The challenge is to make a low-cost production series by using commercial components and a production friendly design.

  • A Single Feed per Beam Antenna Product

    Status date: 26 March 2015

    The project completed the design and manufacture of an Engineering Qualification Model (EQM) of a Feed Block Assembly (FBA) for future Ka Band Single Feed Per Beam (SFPB) antenna programmes.

  • TAOSATT

    Status date: 26 March 2015

    The proposed project relates to the development of an ‘Always Online’ single enclosure, outdoor grade, data router capable of connecting local users and systems over wired and wireless Ethernet to remote sites via cellular and satellite communications networks. The product will provide all the required functionality from a single unit, mounted on the outside of vehicles, watercraft or buildings and will operate initially on L-Band and cellular services with a migration path to other networks and services in the near future. The router will also transmit GNSS location and speed data for use with vehicular tracking and location based service solutions.

  • C-Band Primary Feeds for Multibeam Antenna Applications

    Flexible payloads in correlation with the raise of interest for C-band multibeam payloads due to frequency spectrum scarcity are emerging. Customers are currently considering the potential use of multibeam solutions for the replacement of ‘conventional’ solutions generating large beams. One of the main challenge is to develop the antenna configuration and associated feed clusters.

  • Development and Industrialization of Telecommand Receiver and Telemetry/Beacon Transmitter

    Status date: 20 March 2015

    Through the Artes-34 R&D project “TTC” with ESA, Norspace has developed and qualified three different EQMs. These are a Command Receiver (Rx), a Beacon Transmitter (Bx) and a Telemetry Transmitter (Tx). In addition a 31dBm Ku Band output amplifier module has been qualified under the frame of this contract. This has been an important and strategic activity for Norspace, and this development project has established the company as a provider of TTC equipment for space. The main strategic and technical objectives have been met, and commercial orders for flight models of Beacons, Transmitters and Command Receivers have been signed. This success shows that this program has been very useful and demonstrates an efficient use of ESA funding.

  • REGYS 20

    Status date: 12 January 2015

    The objective of this activity was to increase the robustness and speed of the EEE parts procurement and testing of the Regys20 gyrometer for space applications. This comprised of 2 main work packages: i) EEE parts procurement transfer from Syderal to Sagem, through a CPPA (centralized parts procurement agent), and ii) the robustification of the testing process. This latter WP consists of 4 main points of improvement: - 2 additional two-axes rate tables were qualified to avoid a bottleneck in the AIT process - The EEPROM management process was enhanced with multiple checks to avoid human operator error and detect read/write errors - The calibration process was robustified to automatically detect out-of-family-behaviour - The test sequence was automated to allow weekend and night-time automated testing and save considerable time. The combination of the above 2 WPs has considerably increased the competitiveness of the Regys20 and increased the robustness of the AIT process.

  • Digital test bench for fast testing of complex Payloads

    The objective of the study is to develop and validate a digital test bench for use during AIT and IOT for all C-band to Ku-band payloads, exploiting innovative and rapid RF test techniques to significantly reduce the overall test schedule. Furthermore extension to Ka-band payloads and RF interface using optical fiber are designed.

  • Antenna multi-reflectors pallet product

    Status date: 17 December 2014

    The objective of this ARTES3-4 project is to study and to design a multi-reflectors pallet antenna. This new antenna product is envisaged to generate several coverages from one antenna structure and one single deployment. The design drivers of the product are the capability to accommodate several reflectors from 2 to 5, with different diameters varying from 1600mm to 900mm, a focal length varying from 1.9m to 3.2m. The reflector mounted on the pallet shall be able to operate in Ku and Ka frequency bands, and to realise mono beam and multibeams misions. Moreover, the pallet product shall be compatible of small launchers and several platforms like Spacebus, Eurostar and Alphabus. This antenna should be accommodated in double deployment. All these characteristics are considered to design this new product.

  • Medium and High Power EPC development

    Status date: 15 December 2014

    The target of this project was to develop a new range of EPC that allows SSPAs to replace Travelling Wave Tube Amplifiers (TWTAs) in the power range and allows a significant improvement on implementation aspects for some applications. The EPC is able to provide up to 250W with efficiency over than 90%.

    Status date: 09 December 2014

    A satellite based alarm and surveillance system for security applications. The system is designed to provide connectivity via satellite between alarm and surveillance systems on one side and security centres and other receivers, for example to protect the owners of the property. The system will comply with the highest performance classification of alarm transmission systems in accordance with the relevant system directives, in particular EN 50136 and VdS 2471 and will provide a transparent link between any 3rd party alarm transmitter and receiver systems conforming to EN 50131 (Intruder Alarm Systems) and EN 50132 (CCTV Systems) and the applicable VdS directives.

  • SkyNurse

    Status date: 09 December 2014

    SkyNurse intends to develop an operating centre for the delivery of distance education and residential courses directed at nursing personnel in non- EU countries in order to employ the trained personnel in EU hospitals and health care centres. SkyNurse also aims to improve nursing practice throughout the EU developing standard distance learning models suitable for national and international use and preparing learning materials that will offer uniform education, cultivate a harmonious professional background and promote standardized nursing procedures. The project has been piloted with an actual group of nursing staff in Romania prior to their recruitment in the Italian healthcare system.

    The Hamlet Project provides for the full integration of different media's didactic-pedagogical possibilities, and for the creation of an open and flexible learning environment, which is characterised by a both synchronic and diachronic didactic strategy, and served by satellite communications integrated with terrestrial based Internet connection. The environments provided by the Hamlet platform will be: the Orientation Portal, the Videoteque, the Virtual Library, the Virtual Laboratory, and the Didactic Cyberspace. Videochat with the teacher-telematic tutor, face to face, discussion forums, e-mail and links will be supported.

    VideoSat for Distance Learning (V4DL) aims to exploit satellite broadband and broadcast capabilities, providing Value Added Services for Continuing Medical Education and Medical Scientific TV via Satellite. V4DL carries two major innovations: a distance learning methodology that binds emotional and narrative learning theory with video simulation technology (Edufiction), and an optimised user experience thanks to a specific Set Top Box capable of executing the specific eLearning application, managing the GUI and all data transmission functionalities.
